PBR Materials are the backbone of all 3D projects. They’re what brings the project to life.
They define how surfaces react to light, making objects look realistic and consistent across different lighting conditions.
In my game, I’ve used PBR Materials to texture buildings, foliage, water, the landscape and so much more.

Here are some valuable tips on using PBR Materials in Unreal Engine:
- Don’t overuse high resolution materials (especially on surfaces that aren’t visible). Using high resolution and complex materials on faces that aren’t visible, can drain performance.
- Limit the use of over-complicated material graphs. While complex, hyperrealistic materials can look amazing, they are very performance costly, without the right optimization techniques.
- Bake certain effects. For static assets, baking performance costly features like lighting, AO (ambient occlusion), etc. can improve performance.
