This topic goes hand-in-hand with Master Materials.
Master Materials are the “parent” materials, while Material Instances are “child” materials. They are duplications of the parent that let you adjust custom parameters without modifying the original.
In my project, I created different instances of the parent window material, and applied different image textures to each instance, to create different windows easily.
